Settling in Germany: everyday orientation

The first weeks in a new country are full of formalities. Knowing the key steps saves time and stress.
1. Register your address
After moving into a home you generally have to register at the residents’ registration office within two weeks. Bring your ID and the landlord’s confirmation of residence.
2. Housing and rental contract
Read the rental contract carefully: base rent, utilities, notice periods and deposit. The deposit is legally capped at three months’ base rent. If anything is unclear, get help before you sign.
3. Health insurance and doctor
Health insurance is compulsory in Germany. Clarify early how you are insured and find a family doctor – usually the first point of contact.
4. Bank account and tax ID
You need a bank account for salary and rent. The tax identification number is usually sent by post after registration – keep it safe.
5. Take official letters seriously
Letters from offices often contain deadlines. Open your mail promptly, note appointments and get support in good time if something is unclear.
